Botulinum toxin has become a staple ally in the fight against wrinkles, but the enthusiasm for this treatment has led to two extremes: young women who turn to injections without needing them and women over 60 who still hope for miracles. Dr. Amalia Anghel, primary Dermatovenerology doctor, expert in Dermatoaesthetic Medicine at Skinmed Clinic, Center of Excellence in Dermatology Bucharest shows us how the effectiveness botulinum toxin has limits in one direction and in the other, and inappropriate use can lead to unexpected results.
Why does it make NO sense to inject yourself at 18-20?
Many young women believe that if they start prevention early, they will never get wrinkles. The reality is different:
- The skin is still elastic and there are no static wrinkles to prevent.
- Muscles can atrophy prematurely, giving an artificial or expressionless look to the face.
- Excess injections lead to 'Botox tolerance', requiring higher doses earlier.
- It creates a psychological dependency, making you think you constantly need touch-ups.
It is best to start prevention around the age of 25-30, when dynamic wrinkles start to become visible.
Why does botulinum toxin stop working over 60?
Women over 60, on the other hand, hope that botulinum toxin can erase wrinkles deep and can restore volume to the face. Unfortunately, this is not the case. After this age:
- Static wrinkles are deeply impregnated and do not disappear by relaxing the muscles.
- Skin has lost elastin and collagen, requiring more complex treatments.
- The muscles of the face are already weakened, and the extra relaxation can make the skin look even looser.
For women over 60, effective alternatives are:
- Hyaluronic acid for volumizing and smoothing deep wrinkles.
- Collagen stimulating treatments (radiofrequency, lasers).
- Suspension threads for non-invasive facelift.
- Surgical facelift, if the sagging skin is too advanced.
Filters, social networks and the obsession with fake perfection
The perfect faces in photos in cyberspace are not real, but created with digital filters. Unfortunately, many young girls and even mature women come to the doctor with such edited images and ask for injections to transform them into what they see on screen. This phenomenon is dangerous for several reasons:
- It loses touch with reality: no one looks like an Instagram filter, and wishing you did is an illusion.
- Excessive interventions disfigure, not improve.
- The quest for perfection leads to chronic dissatisfaction because the virtual image cannot be replicated in reality.
What's the point of putting filters on top of filters in cyberspace, if in reality the people you're supposed to meet pass you by because they don't recognize you! It's nonsense and a sure road to disappointment. Every age has its beauty and should be accepted and cherished, not pushed towards an artificial ideal.
Dr. Amalia Anghel: "Personalizing your treatment is the key to a beautiful picture in reality! Each age has particularities and requires tailored solutions. Botulinum toxin is a powerful tool, but it must be used at the right time and strategically. Consult a dermatologist to choose the right solution according to your skin's needs, not just the trends of the moment!".
